FUTURO MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

Provides youth with support, guidance and the knowledge/skills necessary to reach their educational and personal goals. With high drop out rates and low college attendance numbers, young people need support and motivation to prepare for the 21st century. Through Mi Futuro Mentoring Program high school students are paired with caring college student/professional mentors who serve as role models and provide critical support for healthy youth development.

Mi Futuro Mentoring Program
components are:

*Monthly Workshops: Monthly workshops provide the opportunity to develop the mentoring relationship, acquire critical thinking, problem solving, studying, time management, leadership skills and gain college knowledge and preparation. These monthly gatherings include field trips to university campuses and museums.

*Preparation Seminars: These weekly meetings provide supplementary activities that promote increased reading and writing skills, SAT/ACT and CAHSEE examination preparation, and special activities such as discussion groups, photography and computer technology training.

*Tutoring Sessions: Mentees have access to tutoring in math, English, science. and history.

*Building the Bond: Mentors and mentees build their mentoring relationship through consistent weekly communication. This weekly time can be spent assisting with homework, researching colleges, or conversing about school and future goals.

*One-on-one: Matches are encouraged to spend quality time together outside SALEF scheduled activities. These activities are cultural and/or educational in focus.

Mentor/mentee pairs are supported through case management meetings that help to gage academic needs and success of the mentee and provide assistance for the volunteer mentors in building the relationship.
